The creation of the Audi e-tron Spyder


    Certainly, the German automaker Audi, seems to want to change the e-tron, its electric concept car at each car show. Indeed, after introducing the first version of e-tron at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year and the second at Detroit earlier this year following, Audi recently introduced the latest version of the World Paris Motor Show.

    Called thee-tron Spyder, this vehicle resembles that of a scheme to industrialize, especially because it has neglected the all-electric propulsion, which was more commonly used on this model for a hybrid electric and diesel.

    To not deviate from the habits of the manufacturer, Audi e-tron Spyder has taken the concept of glass from the windshield and plunging back, something that was often used on other models before. The vehicle, which has taken 13 cm from the model presented at the Detroit show, has an undeniable presence and a certain distinction in his treatment, two characteristics that have helped build the charm and success of the manufacturer. The side of the engine, we find a twin turbo 3.0 V6 TDI, which is coupled to two electric motors, all connected to a dual-clutch transmission and seven reports. Power proposed by the two electric motors, combined with the 300 horsepower engine, allows the vehicle to have a total power of 474 hp and a torque of 650 Nm cumulative

    Regarding the performance, e-tron Spyder spend 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.4 seconds to reach a top speed electronically limited to 250 km / h.

    From the first sketch to show appearance:The creation of the Audi e-tron Spyder

    • A team of designers, technicians and modelers created the show car for the Paris Motor Show in just five months
    • The high-performance sports car is one-of-a-kind and comprises a number of individually manufactured components

    INGOLSTADT, Germany, Oct 21, 2010 - It is a functional, rectangular building with a gray facade – a hall like thousands of others in the industrial parks dotting our cities. The only sign of any significant activity is a lone Bavarian flag fluttering on a wooden balcony that seems a bit out of place. This seeming wasteland is in reality a place where the future of the automobile is quite literally being made. Things are much livelier inside the hall. Two designers and four modelers are working on a large block of brown industrial plasticine. The result of their handiwork is pioneering for the design of one of Germany's most successful carmakers. This is where the Audi e-tron Spyder, the latest show car from AUDI AG, is being created.

    The faces are drawn with tension at this decisive moment. The modelers and designers are going through the data on screen together one more time. There is no time for lengthy consideration and discussions. Then the decisive click on the "Confirm" button. The mill mounted on two giant arms goes into motion. Fed with the vehicle data, the mill begins carving the designers' design out of the clay. For the next 18 hours, one layer after another is cut away until the first side of the car stretched over a frame of steel, wood and rigid foam stands on the floor of the hall in three dimensions and in full size.

    The mill receives a new load of data for the second half of the model. The designers work on two different vehicle sides in this early form-finding phase, which allows alternatives to be compared directly and makes decisions easier. Frank Lamberty, a designer at Audi, uses dark adhesive tapes to check the contours of the model carved by the mill. He carefully works until arriving at the perfect line. Again and again he steps back to view his work from a distance and compares it with the cross-section of familiar production models. A show car should also bear the Audi signature. When describing the form-finding of the Audi e-tron Spyder, Lamberty says, "We were constantly bouncing between two worlds like a ping-pong ball. On the one side was the elegant shape of speedboats. On the other was the radical world of naked bikes (motorcycles without full or partial fairings) or roadsters from the 1960s and 1970s. The Audi e-tron Spyder is the result of this inspiring convergence process and unites these two worlds."

    Three months before the start of the show, Lamberty and his team are working time-intensively on the clay model in the hall. That they are concentrating on the design of a show car is already a success in itself. To design a show car is the dream of many automobile designers and thus a coveted job. "The beauty of a show car is that the initial ideas are often implemented almost unchanged. We are largely free of technical constraints," says Wolfram Luchner, a designer at Audi who played a major role in the creation of the exterior of the Audi e-tron Spyder.

    A multi-staged internal competition decided who got to design the car. 17 designers entered the competition. "The ideas developed were bold and free of constraints. Some of them were even radical. The broad scope of the designs shows the great potential of our designers," says Stefan Sielaff, Head of Audi Design. He initially chose four teams, who then had two weeks to flesh out their "directions," or initial designs. In the next step, two designers built their designs as 3D data models. For the final choice between the last two designs, the teams projected their computer data on the big screens in the design studio. What just a few weeks ago were the initial strokes on paper was now displayed on the walls as a three-dimensionally tangible show car.

    A lot is at stake with the final decision. After all, the chosen design will be catching the eye of thousands of international visitors at the show in Paris.

    A second portrayal method viewed under daylight helps to properly evaluate the colors and shapes. The designers build full-size silhouettes of their proposals and position these on a race track. The winning proposal is then chosen in daylight at a distance of approximately 100 meters – a radical and simultaneously emotion-packed design. An open sports car with a distinctive, prominently arched windshield that, like the visor of a helmet, describes speed in its purest form.

    Cut off from the outside world, designers and technicians are now working together inside the hall, which is secured by an alarm system. Technical Development in Ingolstadt had initially developed the undercarriage of the Audi e-tron Spyder separately. The two teams are now working together on site on the clay model. They measure, discuss and talk about even slightly misaligned contours. Just a few centimeters can mean that the required hardware will no longer fit in the show car. The engineers define the most important structural design data during the first design phase. The exterior of the Audi e-tron Spyder has roughly 10 so-called hard points – specifications that the designer is not allowed to alter. Everything else is up for negotiation.

    And because design does not always follow the rules of technical feasibility, these negotiations are not always easy. "The design freedom is what makes a show car so appealing," says Luchner. "I always have the original design in my head. My objective is to implement this design with as few changes as possible." The technicians, on the other hand, sometimes have to reign in the creativity of the designers. Although largely made from parts that only exist for this vehicle, the show car must still meet all of the technical requirements. It must be safe and drive in such a way that it can also be used by journalists for filming and photo shoots.

    While four modelers apply the finishing touches to the door handles with knives, scrapers and planes, the designers and engineers have turned their attention to a wheel. Delicate struts of aluminum and carbon are reminiscent of a turbine; the delicacy of the material more of a fine piece of jewelry. Designers and technicians agree that here they together have succeeded in turning what initially seemed to be an impossible idea into reality. This could not have been done in a production model. Whereas the wheels of previous show cars comprised four to five pieces, the wheels of the Audi e-tron Spyder are made up of 66 individual parts.

    "The designers were the driving force," says Uwe Haller, who is responsible at Audi for coordinating the construction of concept vehicles. "It became clear to us pretty quickly that this wheel could not be manufactured out of one part, as is usually the case. The design for the wheels was so well received, however, that we did whatever was necessary to turn the proposal into reality. The result is a perfect fit for the Audi e-tron Spyder: sharp contours and visually precise lines combining carbon and aluminum."

    Six weeks before the show, the two halves of the model have been combined to yield a painted whole. The modelers' work has paid off. At first glance the modeled clay looks no different than a functional automobile. Even the headlights and door handles have been carved out down to the last detail. Everything has to be just right, because the model serves as the basis for what is known as the design freeze. This is the first major milestone for the designers, a sort of advance premiere of the show car, with the excitement to match at the presentation. The Audi Board of Management makes the final form-finding decision, and the starting gun finally sounds: Construction of the final show car can begin.

    The outer skin of the show car is made of carbon fiber. Because the material can still be modified considerably more easily than steel or aluminum even at a late point in the process, it is ideal for the Audi e-tron Spyder, which must be created in a short period of time. The employees first mill the individual body parts as negative molds from a block of rigid foam. They then apply the carbon fiber fabric, let it harden, trim it, grind it and prime it. Everyone working here is aware of the importance of precision. They are making a one-of-a-kind vehicle. And not just the final show car is one-of-a-kind. Because there is only one of every component of this vehicle, replacing components in Paris is out of the question. The time pressure is enormous. The date of the show in Paris is steadily approaching. The show car is still just a collection of individual parts waiting to be assembled. It is hard to believe that the Audi e-tron Spyder will soon make its big appearance.

    As many as ten employees at the same time work on the showpiece during the final weeks and at least as many again are involved in the background work. They are all experts for their respective components and know precisely what they have to do. In the end they join the pieces together with a precision down to the millimeter. The body is then crowned in silver in the paint shop. The Audi e-tron Spyder shines at the Paris Motor Show, as do the employees. They have done it. The idea of a hybrid-powered roadster has become a reality. It is on display in Paris: compact, elegant and open to the heavens.

Paris Debuts: MINI Countryman WRC


    MINI has unveiled the new MINI WRC debuted at the Paris Auto Show. The new MINI WRC, which will contest the FIA World Rally Championship from 2011, will receive its world premiere at this international motor show. In addition, Kris Meeke (GB) has been confirmed as one of the drivers who will contest the championship with this brand new rally car.

    The MINI WRC, powered by a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder Di turbo-charged engine, recently received a baptism of fire, acquitting itself well during initial testing at Prodrive’s rally track. The company commenced development of the car in 2009, and a concept of the MINI WRC will be displayed in Paris.

    The power transmission takes place via an Xtrac 6-speed, sequential gearbox. For its outings on the rally stages, the MINI Countryman chassis has been fitted with a roll cage developed by Prodrive, which exceeds the strict safety.

    Paris.Visitors to the 2010 Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris (FR) can look forward to a special treat: The new MINI WRC, which will contest the FIA World Rally Championship from 2011, will receive its world premiere at this international motor show. In addition, Kris Meeke (GB) has been confirmed as one of the drivers who will contest the championship with this brand new rally car.

    The MINI WRC, powered by a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder Di turbo-charged engine, recently received a baptism of fire, acquitting itself well during initial testing at Prodrive's rally track. The company commenced development of the car in 2009, and a concept of the MINI WRC will be displayed in Paris. "The Paris Motor Show is the perfect stage, on which to launch our MINI WRC," says Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing. "The response to our announcement that MINI will return to the world of rallying next year was very positive. The FIA World Rally Championship is the pinnacle of rallying, making it the ideal platform for demonstrating the competitive spirit of our brand. The development of the car isrunning on schedule, and the preparations for the world championship are in full swing. The MINI Countryman production model provided the ideal basis for our new world championship challenger."

    The 2011 World Rally Championship will see the new MINI WRC contesting in six of 13 scheduled rounds, with MINI competing in the full 2012 season. In addition, Prodrive plans to make available customer versions to independent teams for use in the championship.

    Rallying is hardly unchartered territory for MINI. In the past this popular motor sporting genre decisively shaped the image of the brand. The MINI Cooper S became a true legend through its numerous victories on Rally Monte Carlo. The European Rally Championship, too, saw MINI notch up serial successes. "MINI can look back on a successful tradition in rallying," says Dr WolfgangArmbrecht, Senior Vice President Brand Management MINI. "The interest in motorsport among the present generation of MINI customers is massive. The WRC provides an excellent communications platform for the MINI Countryman,upon which the MINI WRC is based."

    Prodrive, an experienced motorsport operation, was chosen as the partner in the quest to continue MINI's success story. The company, founded by David Richards, is viewed as one of the most respected and successful in rallying. "This project is a truly passionate opportunity," believes Richards. "MINI is a cult brand which left a lasting impression during its previous motorsport campaigns. We are both extremely happy and proud to be on board as a partner when MINI returns to rallying. We aim to use 2011 as a preparatory year, amassing experience in order to ensure we are fully competitive from the start of the following season. But let's not underestimate the task ahead of us nor the stiff competition we will face on the way, however our target is firmly set on winning the World Championship title again with MINI."

    Prodrive was founded in 1984, and has established itself as one of motorsport's leading independent teams. Currently employing over 500 staff, the company is based in Banbury (GB). Among other successes, Prodrive has to date won six World Rally Championships, five British Touring Car titles, and scored three class victories in France's classic Le Mans 24 Hours.

    Kris Meeke has been confirmed as the first driver to compete for Prodrive in the MINI WRC. The rally ace from Dungannon (GB) first came to prominence when he won the British Junior Rally Championship in 2002. Numerous victories and titles were to follow. With support from his long-term mentor and former rally world champion, the late Colin McRae (GB), Meeke has been able tosuccessfully establish himself on the rally scene. The Northern Irishman celebrated his most recent success last year, when he won the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC).

    The MINI Countryman is the youngest MINI model and also the first to be equipped with an all-wheel-drive system. Therefore this model provided the logical basis for a competitive rally derivative. The flagship MINI Cooper S Countryman is powered by a 1,6-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, supplemented not only by a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection, but also fullyvariable valve management - so offering by far the best relationship between engine power and fuel consumption in its class. The engine produces an impressive 135 kW / 184 bhp, and accelerates the MINI Cooper S Countryman from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.

    As part of the MINIMALISM concept, a range of fuel- and emission-reducing features are fitted as standard and/or in appropriate combinations, including Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start/Stop function, Shift Point Display and the need-based operation of ancillary components.

    All MINI Cooper S Countryman and MINI Cooper D Countryman are optionally available with permanent MINI ALL4 all-wheel drive, with an electro-hydraulic differential positioned directly on the final drive varying the distribution from front to rear in an infinite process. Under normal driving conditions up to 50 per cent of the engine's power goes to the rear wheels; under extreme conditions up to 100 per cent, offering a new, high-traction rendition of the agile handling so typical of MINI.

    The heart of the MINI WRC is the BMW Motorsport-developed 1.6 litre, fourcylinder Di turbo-charged engine which can be deployed not only in the WRC, but also in other championships running to the FIA's Super2000 regulations. Paris Motor Show: 2011 Hyundai i20 Sport Edition


    Hyundai is showing off the new Sport edition of its i20 supermini at this year’s Paris motor show.

    The car comes with a body-colored front skirt, flared wheelarches, a glossy radiator grille mesh insert, black bezel headlights, as well as daytime running lights. In addition to that, the exterior was fitted with glossy B-pillars, tinted windows, dark red tinted rear lights. The car now rides in 17-inch alloy rims that use Yokohama tires.

    Inside you’ll find orange leather Recaro seats, a black leather gearshift cover with orange-colored seams, a chrome gear shift knob, a leather-wrapped center console, leather-covered door panels, and a 7-inch touch screen navigation.

Paris Auto Show: 2013 Lotus Elan【Video】


    Lotus has unveiled the 2013 Elan, The 2013 Lotus Elan will go into production in the summer of 2013 and will be put on sale in the fall the same year. The 2013 Lotus Elan is powered by a smaller engine than the previous two model. It has a 4.0 liter V6 pressure charged engine capable of delivering up to 450 PS and taking into consideration its relative light weight of 1,295kg. Planned to be produced in summer 2013, the 2013 Elan will feature a 2+2 variant and optional hybrid technology with KERS. The car will enters the market in autumn 2013 with price indication approximately £75,000.

    Also shared with the Esprit is a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox and optional kinetic energy recovery system or KERS. Peak output is rated 450 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque, which is significantly lower than the Esprit’s 620 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, however, the Elan is not too far off the pace thanks to a lighter kerb weight of just 2,885 pounds. Lotus claims a 3.5 second time for the 0-60 mph run and a top speed around 190 mph.

    Production will start in Summer 2013 with deliveries in Autumn 2013. Expected price tag is £ 75,000 (€ 87,000).

2010 Paris Auto Show: Renault Twizy【Video】


    Renault has releases the Twizy mini city car, at the 2010 Paris motor show.

    The Renault Twizy Z.E. Concept is an all-electric compact vehicle which features a width of just 1.1 meters, faired wheels and two seats located one behind the other. It previews the brand's future electric models that will be intrododuced from 2011.

    There will apparently be two different versions of the Twizy available, one sporting nine horsepower that can hit a top speed of 28 miles per hour and one with 20 horses that can hit 47 mph. A three-and-a-half-hour charge will result in 60 miles of range from the onboard lithium ion battery pack.

    The vehicle is powered by a 15-kW electric motor and has a top speed of 47 mph and a range of 60 miles between charges. It features an integrated charger that enables the battery pack to be charged from roadside outlets. On household current, the Twizy can be fully recharged in 3.5 hours.

    Renault claims that the EV is good for 60 miles making it perfect for those who have to commute to the city – just make certain that you do not live more than 60 miles return journey. The cost of the Twizy is expected to be around £6000.

    Along with Renault Fluence Z.E. and Renault Kangoo Van Z.E., Twizy will be the third model in the Renault Z.E. electric vehicle family to be introduced. It is scheduled for release in the UK in early 2012.

    An innovative response to the challenge of urban mobility

    A unique concept

    The ultra-compact footprint of Twizy (length: 2.32 metres / width: 1.19 metres / height: 1.46 metres) is ideally suited to city motoring. Twizy will clearly appeal to busy, car-owning city dwellers looking for a second vehicle, as well as to younger drivers interested in a safe way to gain experience in traffic thanks to the availability of a version that will not require a driver's licence (depending on country).

    Although its compact dimensions are likely to prompt comparisons with the world of scooters, Twizy delivers all the fundamentals associated with any car, namely four wheels, a steering wheel and pedals, plus an enveloping body for two occupants sitting in tandem, one behind the other.

    A unique design

    Twizy combines real character with a resolutely modern design that boasts sweeping lines, open bodywork, original gull wing doors and a full windscreen which extends over the top of the car to form a large glazed area, not to mention the model's original lighting signature.

    Twizy buyers are likely to be sensitive to new design trends and will be able to customise their vehicle thanks to a wide choice of graphics available from launch.

    TWIZY CUSTOMISED BY RENAULT DESIGN AT THE PARIS SHOW

    The Paris Motor Show will see Renault display three Renault Twizys sporting customised liveries conceived by Renault Design.

    The graphics of Twizy Dot Dot's design place the emphasis on elegance, Twizy Circuit takes its cues from the computer-generated imagery associated with science fiction films, and Renault Twizy Totem combines high-energy colours with tribal forms.

    Nine other examples will be visible in virtual form, and visitors to Renault's stand at the Paris Motor Show (or to www.renault-ze.com) will be invited to vote for the customised Twizy they prefer from the 12 creations proposed by Renault Design.

    The design which receives the highest number of votes will serve as inspiration for a limited edition version that will go on sale in 2011.

    As nimble and practical as a scooter, with far superior occupant protection

    Twizy's nimble handling makes it ideal for motoring in and about town. Thanks to its extremely compact footprint and a turning circle of just 3.4 metres, Twizy has no trouble finding parking space in built-up areas where micro city cars give up and look elsewhere.

    Twizy's motor delivers maximum torque (57Nm; four times that of a three-wheeled 125cc scooter) the instant it is switched on. Renault Twizy consequently accelerates crisply from standstill and performs briskly in traffic. A top speed of 47mph also ensures that Twizy is at home in suburban traffic and on busy ring roads, etc. In some countries, a version limited to 28 mph will be available.

    A particularly practical solution:

    • Twizy's enveloping body and side deflectors combine the enjoyment of open-air motoring with protection from the elements. Additional lower door panels are available to provide even more effective shielding against wind and rain.
    • The amount of in-car stowage space is ideally suited to the needs of owners travelling to and from work, or to and from the shops. A 31-litre lockable cubby - ideal for a briefcase or limited shopping - is readily accessible underneath the rear seat. The capacity of this locker can easily be increased to 55 litres. There are also three litres of stowage space either side of the steering wheel.

    Easy to drive:

    • Driving Twizy is a different, yet enjoyable and intuitive experience. Acceleration is smooth, torque is instantly available and the motor is particularly quiet.
    • Dashboard information includes an econometer and a range gauge. Both are very clear and ensure that drivers feel immediately at home behind the wheel.

    Twizy provides a standard of safety performance superior to that of a scooter.

    Twizy's bodywork, for example, is far more visible in traffic to other road users. In the case of a head-on collision, both occupants are protected by a deformable structure, while the outboard position of the four wheels and the lateral beams located either side of the chassis provide protection should the vehicle be involved in a side-on impact. The safety retention systems include a driver's airbag, a four-point harness at the front and a three-point safety belt at the rear. Also, since Twizy's occupants are protected and held in place, they are under no legal requirement to wear any sort of protective gear (crash helmet, protective clothing, etc.). Thanks to its four-wheeled chassis and extremely low centre of gravity, Twizy delivers a reassuringly stable ride, while disc brakes all-round ensure precise, efficient stopping power.

    An all-electric vehicle for zero-emission motoring (during road use)

    Renault Twizy's carefully honed weight - 450kg, including batteries (100kg) - is directly beneficial to its range which stands at 60 miles (combined cycle). Its battery is also particularly easy to charge thanks to an extendable spiral cable stored beneath a flap at the front of the vehicle. Thanks to an integrated charger, this cable is also compatible with roadside battery charging facilities. An adapter permits this cable to be plugged into any 220V 10A household electrical supply.

    The battery fully charges in three-and-a-half hours.

    Twizy will go on sale in Europe at the end of 2011 with a price tag similar to that of a three-wheeled scooter. For the UK, launch is planned for the first quarter of 2012. Like the other models that make up the Renault Z.E. range, customers will be able to take out a monthly subscription to cover battery rental and associated services.
